COMMONWEALTH Games cycling gold medallist Oenone Wood will contest the Lake Macquarie Kermesse on November 9.
Wood, who won the individual time-trial at the Melbourne 2006 Games and finished second in the road race, retired from international competition following the world road championships in September to concentrate on her career as an electrical engineer. The 28-year-old, who was born in Newcastle, settled back in the city just before competing in the Beijing Olympics. She was a bronze medallist in the 2005 world championship and was fourth in the road race at the Athens Olympics.Wood also won back-to-back world cup series in 2004 and 2005.The women's race will be over 30 minutes and then one lap of the 5.4-kilometre circuit.Peter Milostic, runner-up in the NSW criterium championship last Sunday, will start one of the favourites in the men's division, over 45 minutes and one lap.The Penrith-based rider was last week forced out of the Sun Tour in Victoria with illness but recovered well to finish behind Peter McDonald in the state criterium. He has again been racing in good form this season and is only one point behind Blair Martin in the race for NSW Roadman of the Year honours.Joe Lewis, winner of the NSW under-23 criterium championship last Sunday, will return home to compete. The 19-year-old, who is studying sports media at university in Canberra, will join the Melbourne-based Drapac Porshe team early next year.Illawarra-based Scott Law, who won the NSW under-19 criterium championship last weekend, and Lidcombe rider Alex Carver, who finished second, could be two of the young guns to watch out for.
